Spot Guide: Lago di Lugano (Ceresio), Switzerland

(By: Serge Rezzonico)

The best wind can be caught with a low pressure moving east and bad wheather on one side of the Alps. This wind (Foehn (German), Favonio (Italian)) blows from the rainy part to the other side of the Alps and can be very strong there (sometimes up to 10 bft, especially when the Foehn blows on Uri Lake).

SPOTS

MAGLIASO, CASLANO

Access: road Lugano - Agno - Ponte-Tresa, exit in Magliaso after the gas station
Wind: North (Favonio, Foehn), side-shore anything from 4 to 8 bft (often gusty)

Flat water or small chop, the fetch is only about 2 km. The Lake is about 1 km wide at this point, a safe place with strong wind. Some people also sail at the campsite in Agno. Usually a good place when the wind is too light elsewhere (sails 6.0 and up)

CAMPIONE

Access: highway Lugano - Chiasso exit in Melide
Wind: North (Favonio, Foehn) side-shore

This spot is very good when the wind isn't too gusty, the fetch is much longer than in Magliaso and the lake is 2 km wide, so the chop is better for jumping. Launching can be challenging, between small boats and metal ramps, watch out for your monofilm! Drive all the way through this Italian enclave (no passport needed), past the casino (money needed). When this spot works, people generally use sails between 4.5 and 5.0

LUGANO

Access: downtown Lugano - Cassarate, right after the bridge on the Cassarate river.
Wind: North (Favonio, Foehn) off-shore, East (Porlezzina), South (Breva) on-shore

This is usually a beginner - intermediate spot, although the offshore North wind can make it hard to come back if you get in trouble. The afternoon South wind is similar to the one found on Como Lake but it is usually around 3 bft and sometimes stronger, with bad weather or after the North wind dies on a sunny day. It's great for cruising around with a longboard: you can reach the other side of the Lake, which is almost inaccessible by land. The view from the middle of the Lake is spectacular. The East wind is hardly predictable and changes quickly. Watch out for big boats (or use their wake).

RIVA, CAPOLAGO

Access: highway Lugano - Chiasso
Wind: North (Favonio, Foehn) side-shore

Probably the safest place with strong wind because the lake ends some 100 m downwind. The valley is narrow here and the wind doesn't always enter with the right direction.

PORLEZZA (Italy)

Access: road Lugano - Gandria - Menaggio (on the way to Como Lake) at the end of the Lake
Wind: West, on-shore

The afternoon thermal wind isn't as strong as on Como Lake and is good for beginners. There's a campsite with a beach where you get the best wind, but usually it's not enough for shortboards.
